Travel Journalism Courses in Berlin

Treetop Travel Journalism is a creative organisation, based in Berlin, that provides the opportunity to visit and write about one of the world’s most intriguing cities, via our travel journalism courses. Those on the 3-4 weeks projects attend travel writing workshops where they plan and write a travel guide, with the programme culminating in the publication of their work. The project also includes German language classes and customised tours of the city.

Our Travel Writing Course

Three days per week, those on our project meet at our creative writing workshops. The time here is spent planning the guide – who’s the target audience? What will we write about? Who is going to visit which site? And so on. Our travel journalism mentor is on hand to make sure the guide is going to plan and to give the project members feedback on their work.

We also have weekly graphic design meetings to make sure the guide looks great as well as being beautifully written. The guides can be about anything the team agrees on – our next project will be solely focused on the Blues scene in Berlin!

Interactive German Lessons

We believe that it benefits our travel journalists greatly to get up to speed a bit with the local language. We have partnered with a local Berliner company called Feinsprecher. Their language classes are truly interactive – they are mixed with cooking classes, so our team members will also be learning about local German cuisine. There are also excursions to local food markets for real-life practise! The lessons take place in the same coworking space as our travel writing workshops so project members can work and study in the same place.

Customised City Tours

We want to offer those on our journalism course something different from the usual tours you’ll get when you visit Berlin. That is why we run our tours with a private guide, and customise them before the project starts. Last month we ran a tour dedicated solely to lakes in Berlin, as well as tours of modern Berlin through the district of Kreuzberg, and a tour of some of the city’s most recognisable graffiti murals. Next month we’ll go on a cold war tour through Berlin to see the landmarks that defined this fascinating period.

Our travel journalism courses also take us on customised city tours

Our Coworking Space

The travel journalism courses, as well as the German language classes, take place in West Berlin at a beautiful coworking space called ´tuesday coworking´. The office has a real sense of community, and the rest of the people working there tend to be on creative projects in the start-up or small business phase. There’s also the bonus of a second, smaller office located nearby which is available for us 24/7, should our travel writing students need some extra time to work on the project.

When do our travel workshops run?

The travel writing course runs on a monthly basis during the summer, from June-September, and there are 3-week projects in winter (December) and Easter (April). We typically take our last applications 48 hours before the projects start.

Thank you for taking the time to read our article, we hope to see you on one of our upcoming projects!

Plan a trip to Berlin and share this with your travel buddy! Also, don’t forget to pin for later!
